Rob Stepen’s group, The Generations, embarks on a nostalgic yet transformative journey with their latest album, “Alternate View”. This project traces its roots back to the early 1980s when Rob first delved into the realm of 80’s rock and roll, crafting heartfelt songs that echoed the experiences of that era. Two such songs, “Your Way” and “Have You Seen My Heart”, stand as testament to Rob’s journey through relationships and personal growth during the vibrant 1980’s.
Originally recorded in 1985 in Chicago, Illinois, these tracks were captured in the warm embrace of analog technology, a hallmark of that era. After his recording session was complete, Rob met with the engineer who handed him two reel-to-reel tapes. Rob did not own a reel-to-reel player and could not listen to the recordings. Two tapes were stored in a forgotten box for decades, laying dormant until rediscovered in Rob’s attic in January 2023. Determined to resurrect these musical relics, Rob sought the expertise of his friend and musician, Jim Prokulewicz, who connected him with the legendary and iconic Steve Albini. With Albini’s deft touch, the original tapes were lovingly restored and transferred to digital format, breathing new life into Rob’s cherished compositions.
Eager to honor the essence of the original recordings while embracing modern sensibilities, Rob enlisted a talented group of musicians, who became The Generations to re-record these tracks at Electrical Audio, Steve Albini’s renowned studio. Steve produced and engineered these songs in collaboration with Taylor Hales, affectionately known as the Office Wolf at the studio. Albini and Hales meticulously crafted a contemporary rendition of these timeless pieces. The aim was clear: preserve the core integrity of the songs while infusing them with a fresh vitality that resonates with today’s audience.
Once the recordings were complete, the final step was entrusted to Bob Weston at Chicago Mastering Service. His mastery ensured that each track achieved its full sonic potential, readying them for the vinyl medium. The meticulously mastered vinyl lacquers made their way to Third Man Records in Detroit, Michigan, where they were transformed into physical albums, each groove etched with the passion and dedication of everyone involved in this musical odyssey.
“Alternate View – the Album” by The Generations stands not only as a testament to Rob Stepen’s enduring musical journey but also as a bridge between past and present, capturing the essence of decades past while resonating with the spirit of contemporary rock enthusiasts. It is a celebration of resilience, creativity, and the timeless power of music to transcend generations.

The passing of Steve Albini in spring of 2024 was a tragedy to all involved in the Alternate View recording and the music industry as a whole. May his memory be for a blessing.
